BEFORE YOUR SCHOOL BUYS OR INSTALLS ANY DEVICES ON DOORS, PLEASE CONSULT A KNOWLEDGEABLE DOOR AND HARDWARE CONSULTING COMPANY TO ENSURE CODE COMPLIANCE. (Read the PDF “School Liability and the Law of Unintended Consequences” summary)
March 16, 2015 the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE FIRE MARSHALSreleased a reference for Suggested Classroom Door School Security with a checklist. Their intention is for it to be used for State Fire Marshals, other fire officials as well as , law enforcement, and school officials. We were asked to share it to help educate fire officials, law enforcement and school officials.
Allert: CLASSROOM DOOR LATCH DEVICES IN VIOLATION OF FIRE SAFETY RULES.
School Administrators: The Michigan Bureau of Fire Services plan review department has issued a bulletin regarding a large number of schools installing code-violating “security devices” on classroom doors.

Remember that there are many more student and teacher victimizations that take place in schools than shootings, along with fires, and non-firearm or explosive related crimes. Doors must allow ANYONE, even handicapped individuals , to be able to escape a building easily. Life Safety Code 101 and NFPA 80 specifically address public building egress and cannot be ignored by school administration and teachers.
Administrators need to also work on THREAT ASSESSMENTS OF STUDENTS.

“SCHOOL SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS – BEST PRACTICES FOR SETUP Cameras mounted near main entrances and in administrative offices can help you record each visitor as they enter and exit your school. Cameras near exits can also help reduce truancy. Fixed cameras can be strategically placed in order to protect valuables like computers, sound equipment, trophies and books.Outdoor surveillance cameras in parking lots can help protect older students and staff when leaving school late or arriving early. These cameras can also discourage break-ins and vandalism during school hours.”
