March 16, 2015 the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF STATE FIRE MARSHALSreleased a reference for Suggested Classroom Door School Security with a checklist. Their intention is for it to be used for State Fire Marshals, other fire officials as well as , law enforcement, and school officials. We were asked to share it to help educate fire officials, law enforcement and school officials.

Remember that there are many more student and teacher victimizations that take place in schools than shootings, along with fires, and non-firearm or explosive related crimes. Doors must allow ANYONE, even handicapped individuals , to be able to escape a building easily. Life Safety Code 101 and NFPA 80 specifically address public building egress and cannot be ignored by school administration and teachers.

Administrators need to also work on THREAT ASSESSMENTS OF STUDENTS.
